Charolais and HCC launch Welsh Suckler Herd of the Year competition
The search is on for the leading suckler herd in Wales.
All suckler producers from Holyhead to Haverfordwest using a registered Charolais sire will be eligible to enter.
The competition has been launched by the Welsh Charolais Region and Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales.
Herd entries will be judged on management, health status and marketing and in particular the performance of their Charolais sired calves. Entries close on March 31 and judging will take place in June.
The awards will be officially presented to the four finalists at the Royal Welsh Show at Builth Wells in July. The winner will receive a 500 cash prize, with the other finalists receiving British Charolais Cattle Society bull purchase vouchers worth 250.
We are encouraging suckled calf producers to enter our new venture which is designed to reward and encourage farmers who are using a high genetic merit Charolais bull to produce highly efficient, fast maturing quality calves that leave a commendable margin for both suckler producers and finishers, said the secretary of the Welsh Charolais Region, Diane Rees
We are optimistic the award will attract widespread support from farmers located throughout Wales, and that it will achieve one of our key objectives - to strengthen links between pedigree breeders and commercial producers.
HCC Project Executive Dewi Hughes said: We are pleased to support this award as it has a strong focus on herd management, health status and marketing which are all vital elements in a profitable suckler herd.
