Top class rams at Mid Wales sale

Aug 10 2009

Farmers will have the chance to buy top class rams during this year's performance recorded ram sale in Aberystwyth.

This is a golden opportunity to purchase rams in the top 25 per cent of their breed for growth rate and conformation, said Mark Needham, Technology Transfer Officer with Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales.

Research and farm trials have consistently proven that there is a financial benefit in using rams with superior Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).

A high EBV ram that increases returns by 3 per lamb could be worth an extra 600 over his working lifetime, said Mr Needham.

The sale of 116 performance recorded Texel and Suffolk rams takes place at IBERS, Plas Gogerddan, Aberystwyth on Thursday, August 13. There will also be a small number of Beulah, Bluefaced and Lleyn Shearings. Viewing of stock will be available from 12.30pm, with the sale starting at 2pm.

HCC staff and breeders will be on hand to offer advice on ram selection to meet individual business needs.
