New grass and clover varieties unveiled
The newly published Recommended Grass and Clover Lists 2015/16 handbook includes eleven new grass and clover varieties.
It also provides details on the performance and characteristics of each variety which include ten new ryegrasses made up of intermediate perennial ryegrass, late perennial ryegrass and an Italian ryegrass, as well as a white clover called Brianna.
Copies of the latest list can be obtained from Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) at NSA Welsh Sheep 2015 held on 19 May at Kerry, near Newtown, Powys.
“This list is a useful resource for all grassland producers who strive to maximise the productivity of their land,” said Lynfa Davies, HCC’s Technical Development Executive.
“In order to achieve the best results, it is important that farmers can make informed decisions. This list will assist them with the selection of varieties that will perform well in particular systems.”
Grasses and clovers are only included if they have undergone at least six years of rigorous, independent testing. They are tested for factors such as yield, feed quality, disease, and persistence.
The testing is funded by plant breeders and levy boards, including HCC.
Also included in the handbook are tips for reseeding, information and advice on how to select the right type of grass, and guidance on how to make best use of the lists included in the booklet.
The handbook is also available to download as a PDF from the HCC website: http://hccmpw.org.uk/publications/farming_and_industry_development/grassland_management/Back to news listing
