Revelling with red meat on St. David’s Day

Mar 8 2017

British Ambassadors across Europe celebrated St David’s Day with a feast of Welsh food which would not be complete without two of our country’s iconic products, Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef.

The Welsh themed receptions were co-hosted by the Welsh Government and UK Ambassadors at British residencies in Paris, Brussels, Dublin and Madrid to mark our national day and commemorate the Patron Saint of Wales. These celebrations of Welsh culture and history featured a showcase of Welsh produce to please hundreds of influential individuals from the capital cities.

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) sponsored the meat which featured on the innovative food menus. In Paris and Brussels, Welsh Beef was carved and served in front of the guests and hearty helpings of traditional Welsh Lamb cawl were dished out, awakening appetites and tempting taste buds.

The British Ambassador to France, Ed Llewellyn and the chefs at his residence were so impressed with the meat that they are eager to source Welsh Lamb and Beef in the future.

“The products served at our St David’s Day reception were superb and a great showcase in France for the quality of Welsh meat,” said Ambassador Ed Llewellyn. “The UK’s reputation as the source of many exceptional products is growing fast in France, as shown by the substantial UK presence at France’s renowned Salon d’Agriculture this year.  Welsh Lamb and Beef are leading examples of this reputation for quality.”

Another reception, held at the British Residence in Brussels, was hosted by the Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Local Government, Mark Drakeford AM and attended by MEPs and influential guests from across Europe.

HCC Chairman, Dai Davies said: “I was pleased to attend the St David’s Day reception at the British Residence in Brussels in the company of Mark Drakeford AM.

“Despite the Referendum result and the decision to leave the EU, it is crucial that we continue with the work of promoting Welsh red meat overseas, due to the sector’s reliance on export markets. It was fantastic to see such an impressive array of Welsh products at the event and the PGI Welsh Lamb and Beef were very well received.”
