Welsh Culinary Medallists showcase Welsh Black Beef

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has congratulated the Senior and Junior Welsh Culinary teams on their success at the recent Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany.

Competing against thirty-one other nations, the Wales junior team won silver in the hot kitchen and the cold edible buffet and live theatre, while their senior counterparts collected three bronze medals.

As well as marking success for the Wales teams, the Erfurt Olympics were a chance to showcase Welsh produce to the rest of the world. The Hong Kong team won a silver medal for a meal which included a dish of PGI Welsh Lamb, and the Wales teams’ main course featured the finest Welsh Beef.

According to team captain Danny Burke, of the Shared Olive Restaurant in Hawarden, PGI Welsh Beef, and particularly the iconic native Welsh Black breed, is hard to beat.

“The quality of PGI Welsh Beef is without question and we are very proud to be able to use this premium meat product in our menu,” he said. “Welsh Black Beef has good marbling throughout which gives it a great flavour. There is a lot of variety through the different beef breeds, but for me it has to be Welsh Black Beef. It’s raised here in Wales and you can’t ask for anything better.”

“Many congratulations to the Wales Culinary Teams on their success in the Olympics,” said Gareth James, chairman of the Welsh Black Cattle Society. “I’m delighted that our top chefs are showcasing our versatile and tasty Welsh Black Beef at the highest level.”

Owen Roberts, Communications Lead at HCC, said; “We’re very pleased to be working with the Culinary Association of Wales to bring the very best of Welsh produce to greater international prominence. The teams’ success shows that our premium red meat deserves a place on the finest dinner tables; this can only help us to take this positive message to the rest of the world.”
