Welsh Gastropubs recognised for their great grub

Two popular pubs in Wales have been recognised for their fantastic food offering and included on a list of Britain’s Top 50 Gastropubs.

The selected eateries, The Hardwick near Abergavenny and Bunch of Grapes, Pontypridd, are members of the Welsh Lamb Club, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales’ (HCC) exclusive club of restaurants and chefs who are committed to sourcing and serving PGI Welsh Lamb.

The votes for the “Estrella Damm” Top 50 Gastropub Awards are casted by a panel of industry professionals. They include top foodies and hospitality experts, food writers, pubco catering development managers and executive chefs, celebrity and top hospitality industry chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators.

Highest placed gastropub in Wales, The Hardwick, is run by owner and chef, Stephen Terry who has represented Wales on the BBC’s Great British Menu. He is passionate about serving the best local produce, including PGI Welsh Lamb.

He said: “This award is testament to many aspects of our business, one of them being the fantastic local produce.”

This latest listing adds to the Bunch of Grapes’ recent accolades which include CAMRA Welsh Pub of the Year 2016 and Good Pub Guide Best Dining Pub in the UK 2016.

HCC Market Development Manager, Rhys Llywelyn said: “We are very pleased that Wales is represented on this newly-released list of Britain’s best gastropubs, maintaining Wales’ reputation for high quality food and eating experiences. We were equally excited that these eateries are members of our Welsh Lamb Club and have pledged to offer locally produced red meat to their customers on a regular basis.
