Grow your grass and healthy business enterprises
The spring is the season for new grass growth and the resumption of the ‘ON-Farm 2017’ workshops which aim to share the latest developments, ideas and best practice in key fields relating to the red meat sector.
Farmers may sometimes feel that the grass is quite literally greener on the other side of the fence. It is for this reason that grassland management and developing efficient enterprises will be the key themes of the next event arranged by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), held at the Pencoed Campus of Bridgend College on 2nd May at 7pm.
Three expert speakers will share practical knowledge in a lively and engaging way, enabling producers to squeeze the most out of every inch of perfect pasture, leading to increased yields to boost profitabilty and sustainability.
Among the speakers will be renowned grassland expert Chris Duller. Chris will focus on how farmers can translate improvements in their grassland into gains in productivity and the bottom line. He will present a practical guide on how to get the most out of the new Recommended Grass and Clover List 2017-18, an annual industry glossary which brings all the latest research together in one place.
Also taking part will be Dr Joe Angell of the University of Liverpool, a researcher who is involved in the important CODD project.
CODD (Contagious Ovine Digital Dermatitis) is virulent, debilitating and a serious welfare and economic issue for Welsh farmers. It currently affects more than 35% of farms in the UK, yet it can be avoided. Joe Angell will guide farmers through a few simple steps to reduce the risk and save money.
The line-up is completed by local vet Rhian Matthews of Maes Glas Vets. She will focus on improving fertility in the suckler herd.
HCC’s James Ruggeri, Industry Development Executive said: “HCC’s ON-Farm 2017 programme is part of our practical research and development activity which benefits the red meat industry, working together with universities and other agencies to promote the results of new research directly to farmers and processors.
“We look forward to inviting red meat producers from south-east Wales to Bridgend College’s Pencoed Campus for an informative and interesting evening meeting. We will also combine the event with hands-on afternoon sessions for the college students to make the most of the experts’ knowledge.
“Farmers will be able to request a copy of the brand new edition of the Recommended Grass and Clover List, receive information on HCC Scholarship opportunities for 2017 and HCC’s wider work in promoting and developing Welsh Lamb, Welsh Beef and pork from Wales.”
