Newbridge U12s rugby team scores training session with legend Phil John through PGI Welsh Beef

Jun 9 2017

U12s rugby team, Newbridge RFC have won a training session with former Scarlets legend and cup-winning RGC player coach, Phil John after entering PGI Welsh Beef’s Grassroots Rugby competition. As well as the session, PGI Welsh Beef will be providing £1,000 worth of brand new equipment for the team and putting on a barbecue using the finest Welsh bred beef.

The competition was to find the picture that represented junior rugby in Wales, whether that was being carried off the field on the shoulders of giants or on a stretcher, PGI Welsh Beef were searching for the guts, the gaffs and the glory that epitomise the grassroots game. From a selection of 100s of entries, Newbridge U12s took the top prize by showing what the junior game is all about, with the winning photo showing the team waving Welsh flags after winning a game. The training session will take place in September, to prepare the team for the 2017/18 season.

Claire Gilly from Newbridge U12s said, “We’re delighted to have won, we can’t thank PGI Welsh Beef enough. We are so excited for the training with Phil John, hopefully the team will learn a lot from such a legend of the game. All the kids and the parents love rugby, it’s a huge part of our lives and the opportunity to meet a great from the game like Phil was an incredible prize. The new equipment will be incredibly important to us and we’ve got the added bonus of a barbecue too.”

Phil John commented, “It’s great to see so many junior teams in Wales getting involved in this contest. Playing rugby was a huge part of my childhood and being able to give back with the help of PGI Welsh Beef is great. I’m looking forward to working with the team and I’ll be keeping an eye on their results next season and hopefully will propel them on to great things!”

Rhys Llywelyn, Market Development Manager, HCC commented, “We’d like to thank everyone who took part, we had some great entries and it made our decision very tricky. We hope Newbridge enjoy the training session, equipment and the barbecue of course! Rugby is an incredibly important pillar of Welsh culture which goes hand in hand with great Welsh food. We want to show our support for local clubs and the great work they do in the community and it’s fantastic to have a Welsh rugby icon like Phil to pass on his knowledge.”
