Local pork provides the perfect thank you
A Welsh charity and local school cluster has had its fund raising efforts rewarded with a community hog roast after winning a competition from Porc.Wales last year.
Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC)’s Hog It! competition challenged consumers to see how far away their fork was from local pork by searching the Porc.Wales website and sharing their results on social media.
The Welsh Friends of Nepal charity secretary Ceri Phillips entered and won Porc.Wales’ online competition last summer and has recently claimed the hog roast prize to hold a thank you event celebrating the fundraising achievements of Rhyl cluster schools.
The schools raised money to help improve education in Nepal by organising a series of triathlons. The charity is now in the midst of setting up computer and internet access for the schools, with plans to eventually connect students in Rhyl with students in Nepal.
The hog roast was supplied by Rhys Griffiths from Moch Cymreig Fedwen in Llanrwst who produce pork from Welsh pedigree pigs, whilst local butchers Glyn Davies and Dylan Price were on hand during the day.
The Welsh Friends of Nepal secretary and Porc.Wales competition winner Ceri Phillips said:
“It was great to be able to use the Porc.Wales prize to show our appreciation for the wonderful Rhyl Cluster Schools fundraising efforts. It was a wonderful day and everyone commented on how tasty the pork was, so it really was a fitting way to say thank you for all of the school’s hard work.”
Porc.Wales’ Hog It! competition was held last year to highlight Wales’ growing number of high quality pork producers as part of the Porximity campaign where consumers were encouraged to find out ‘how far is your fork from our pork?’
HCC Market Development Officer, Kirstie Jones, said:
“We had a great response to last year’s Porximity campaign and the Friends of Nepal charity were worthy winners. We are looking forward to running it again this year and we will soon be announcing a new competition - so keep an eye out on the Porc.Waleswebsite and the Porc Wales Twitterand Facebookpages for further details.”Back to news listing
