HCC awarded major funding boost for export development

Oct 9 2017

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales is to be awarded £1.5 million to focus on exports as announced by Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths AM.

The announcement was made during the HCC reception at Anuga in Cologne, the world’s largest food tradeshow on Monday 9 October.

The funding has been awarded for the Enhanced Export Development Programme, over three years, which will commence in April 2018.

The funding will provide a major boost to HCC’s efforts on behalf of the Welsh red meat industry to retain its vital European markets during the uncertainty of the next three years, while at the same time growing new business outside the European Union.

HCC Chief Executive Gwyn Howells commented; “HCC welcomes this news by the Welsh Government to fund the Enhanced Export Development Programme, particularly in light of the uncertainty caused by the Referendum. Despite the ambiguity of Brexit, we’re seeing growth in the overseas trade for Welsh red meat and the Enhanced Export Development Programme will drive this forward and help the sector prepare for the future.”

“HCC, in conjunction with our major processors and the Welsh Government, have been successful in growing trade in Europe. The success of Welsh red meat must be secured and not put at risk and this funding will be a key component in ensuring longevity of the sector in export markets.”

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank the Cabinet Secretary for her continued support and for recognising the important contribution that the Welsh red meat industry delivers to achieve greater prosperity to the Welsh economy.”

PGI Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef will be leading the charge for Welsh food and drink at HCC’s   stand   which is prominent among the 7,400 exhibitors at Anuga.

The major lunchtime event hosted by HCC today was attended by representatives of meat companies and over a dozen other Welsh food brands as well as overseas buyers and journalists.
