Farmers’ views sought on lamb weight classifications

Sheep farmers and other industry leaders are being invited to give their opinion on whether the weight bands commonly used as a price measure for prime lambs should be changed.

For many years, Standard Quality Quotation (SQQ) weight bands have served as an average price for all lambs sold at market in Britain. A review is currently being held as to whether SQQ is still fit for purpose, or whether it needs amending to reflect changing markets.

A consultation is being held by English levy body AHDB Beef & Lamb, following input from Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) and Quality Meat Scotland (QMS). The consultation includes a short on-line survey where interested parties can give their views.

“It’s important that farmers in Wales have their say on any proposed changes to the SQQ weight bands,” said HCC’s Industry Development Manager John Richards. “Some may feel that the system needs to be adjusted to take account of changing market realities, while others may prefer to stick to the tried and tested bands.

“Although AHDB is leading the consultation, any changes are likely to take effect across the whole of Britain,” he added. “Auctioneers and processors will also be giving their views, and it’s vital that Welsh sheep farmers’ opinions are fully taken into account.”
