Students Battle for Cookery Crown

Mar 22 2018

Eisteddfod season is in full swing across Wales with children competing in regional Urdd heats for the chance to go through to the main event in Builth Wells at Whitsun.

But in one college this month there’s been a very different kind of eisteddfod. Students at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor weren’t singing, reciting or dancing, but instead were showing off their creativity in the kitchen in the Culinary Eisteddfod in Dolgellau.

In teams of two, students had to prepare, cook, and serve a PGI Welsh Beef curry recipe with steamed rice, onion bhaji and naan bread within two hours. They weren’t allowed sight of the recipe in advance of the competition.

Second year student Philippa Rollings along with Kyle Williams from the first year were crowned as champions.

The recipe came from one of the recipe books of Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC). The red meat promotional body also supported the event by donating a bag of prizes to each competitor, including books which would give them inspiration on how to use fresh Welsh produce in their cooking.

“We had a successful day again this year, with everyone enjoying themselves, taking part and benefiting from the experience,” said Mair Eleri Jones, Tutor in Catering and Hospitality at Coleg Meirion Dwyfor. “The Welsh Beef curry was something that appealed to the young people and combined a number of flavours and cookery techniques.”

“HCC was pleased to support this competition,” said HCC Communications Manager Owen Roberts. “Encouraging the next generation to enjoy using Welsh produce is an important part of our work, and it’s great to see so many of Coleg Meirion Dwyfor’s students taking part.”
