Boosting Dutch demand for Wales’ red meat

Jan 9 2015

Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef will be on display at the Netherlands’ largest hospitality fair next week.

This will be Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) – Meat Promotion Wales’ first visit to ‘Horecava’ - a trade fair aimed at food service industry professionals.

“The Netherlands is a key target market for us in 2015,” said Laura Pickup, Market Development Manager at HCC. “While we already export £14.3 million of Welsh Beef and £4.5 million of Welsh Lamb to the country, our research indicates that there is still room for improvement.”

A total of 57,562 visitors from 33,369 companies attended ‘Horecava’ in 2014. One third of the attendees were directors or company owners and 78% were decision makers.

The horeca sector is one of the fastest growing in Europe. This was clear at last year’s event with 29 per cent - the largest proportion of the total visitors - representing the restaurant sector, followed by the pub/bar/club sector.

Mrs Pickup added: “This trade show is an opportunity to prove to key individuals from hospitality establishments across the Netherlands that Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef are excellent products. A large selection of cuts means that the meat is versatile and can be served in a myriad of dishes.

“Our hope, with the help of our Dutch agent Andre Adolfs, is to open the eyes of restaurateurs, caterers and buyers to our fantastic products at the start of the new year.”

With more than 20 years experience of working in the Nertherlands’ food industry,Andre Adolfs was appointed as HCC’s Dutch representative in September 2014. He will be based on HCC’s stand for the duration of the trade fair along with personnel from Wales’ major processors.

The four-day event will be held on 13-16 January in Amsterdam.
