Next generation of agri entrepreneurs discuss marketing challenges

The future entrepreneurs of Wales’s rural economy gathered in Aberystwyth this week for a forum on how the red meat industry can compete for consumers in the global marketplace.

Members of Farming Connect’s ‘Agri Academy’ Business Innovation Programme met with Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) at the levy body’s headquarters for a round-table discussion on how to meet future challenges of making production as efficient as possible and marketing red meat at home and abroad.

The Agri Academy scholars, who included rural entrepreneurs from across Wales, were briefed on HCC’s role and remit, as well as its current programmes to promote Welsh Beef, Welsh Lamb and pork, and its work to develop the red meat supply chain.

HCC’s Head of Operations, Prys Morgan, said; “It was a pleasure to welcome members of Farming Connect’s Agri Academy to Aberystwyth. We had a fruitful discussion of a range of issues facing the red meat industry as we look to the future after Brexit; improving efficiency across the supply chain, and enabling our Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef brands to appeal to the modern consumer.

“This was an excellent opportunity for HCC to engage with the next generation of farming leaders. I hope they left with an enhanced understanding of the remit of HCC to promote and develop the industry, and we certainly gained an insight into the views of young agri-business owners. I look forward to similar events in future.”

Einir Davies, Development and Mentoring Manager with Farming Connect who deliver the Agri Academy said; “This week’s meeting was a great collaboration with our strategic partners at Hybu Cig Cymru and demonstrates just one of the valuable opportunities offered to members of the Agri Academy. I am looking forward to finding out who the successful candidates for the class of 2017 will be so that we can plan a similar event for next year. The application window is open until 31 March 2017.
