‘Fit, Fertile and Profitable’ campaign continues at Teifi Valley event

Aug 2 2016

A summer campaign by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) to boost ram fertility and farmers’ profitability continues on Saturday, 6 August at a special on-farm event at Maesycrugiau in the Teifi Valley.

Research has suggested that 20% of rams in Wales are sub-fertile, potentially costing sheep farmers thousands of pounds a year.

HCC’s ‘Fit, Fertile and Profitable’ campaign was launched at the Royal Welsh Show and is running throughout this summer, with the aim of sharing best practice among farmers on how to get the most out of their rams.

The latest event is being held at Rhyd-y-Ceir, Jan Rodenburg’s farm between Llandysul and Llanybydder. Jan has long been an advocate of regular recording of ram performance. The event, held in partnership with Signet Breeding Services, is a chance for farmers to share best practice in ram and flock management

Gwawr Parry, HCC’s Industry Development officer, said; “This is afantastic opportunity to explore the benefits of flock performance recording and how genetic improvement can help systems sustainably in the long term. HCC is lucky to have the chance to work with Mr. Rodenburg.

“Improving ram management – which can often be small and practical steps - can make a real difference to sheep farmers’ bottom line.”
