Practice picking the perfect pig

Pig farmers are invited to attend carcase selection training courses arranged by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).

Held at abattoirs across Wales, the events have been arranged for a number of dates during March. They are aimed at small or large scale producers who are keen to increase their understanding of how and when to select a perfect pig for slaughter.

“This is a useful session for farmers who rear pigs of all breeds,” said Luned Evans, HCC’s Industry Development Officer. “The course was launched in 2014 and the feedback has been positive.

“It’s very encouraging to work with producers who are keen to improve their knowledge of current market and consumer requirements. Animal health and welfare are also highlighted during the events.”

The course is facilitated by experienced animal grader, John Messenger from Meat and Livestock Commercial Services Ltd (MLCSL) who will refer to carcases of varying conformation and explain the fat measuring method for grading pigs.

Questions and audience participation is welcomed throughout, enabling attendees to gain the information they need for the purpose of their own herd.
