Pigs and pork at the RWAS Spring Festival

Pig production will be under HCC’s spotlight at the RWAS Spring Festival in Builth Wells next week.

Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) will join hundreds of smallholders for a two-day celebration of country life. The red meat agency’s activities at the event will include an introduction to an exciting project for pork producers and a series of short seminars with the heading ‘Profiting from Pigs.’

Plans for a new website will be revealed on HCC’s stand in the pig shed. This will be a platform to promote the quality of pork from Wales and will be targeted at end consumers and trade customers, ranging from retailers to restaurants. 

The site will become live in the summer and will include an introduction to Welsh pork production, a directory of pig producers and a number of case studies featuring farmers, butchers and chefs.

“This new website will form part of our plans to increase awareness of pork suppliers in Wales and the quality of their products,” said Melanie Hughes, HCC’s Market Development Officer. “It will offer producers an opportunity to build their online presence and will be a starting point for customers who are looking to source locally produced pork.

“During the Spring Festival, we will be introducing the website to the industry and recruiting interested producers for the directory.”

Pig producers wanting to promote their products will have their own profile page on the site which will include information about their business and branding, as well as a link to any existing online presence. 

The website will also include recipe ideas using pork from Wales and nutritional information.

Other HCC activities during the weekend will include a programme of seminars, delivered in partnership with Farming Connect and the RWAS. Also held in the pig shed, these sessions will be suitable for large and small scale producers and will cover topics including pig health, artificial insemination and adding value through direct sales.

Luned Evans, HCC’s Industry Development Officer said: “The seminars are free to attend and will be an interesting source of information for anyone keen to learn about rearing pigs. Speakers with specialist knowledge of the sector have been invited and will be happy to share their expert advice.”

HCC will also have a stand in the Smallholder Centre and will be distributing useful publications that relate to farming and the production of meat from sheep, cows and pigs. Topics will range from animal health, meeting market requirements, grassland and environmental management.
