HCC continue efforts to open US market to Welsh produce

Jul 20 2012

Efforts to export Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef to the United States will continue during the Royal Welsh Show.

Welsh Lamb, along with other meat products from across the European Union, cannot currently be exported to the USA although trade negotiations are currently underway between the two economic powerhouses.

Welsh red meat promotion agency Hybu Cig Cymru is keen to see the negotiations resolved swiftly and restrictions lifted which would enable Welsh Lamb to be sold in the USA.

“Terms were negotiated last year to allow the sale of Welsh Lamb in Canada,” said HCC Chairman Dai Davies.

“We are keen to move forward in North America and sell our produce in the USA, following the success we have achieved in Canada and other countries around the world including Scandinavia and the United Arab Emirates.”

Mr Daryl Brehm, the US Counsellor for Agricultural Affairs who is based at the American Embassy in Paris, will visit the Royal Welsh Show on Monday at the invitation of the Farmers’ Union of Wales. During the day he will visit the HCC stand, where he will be able to see cooking demonstrations involving Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef and taste samples of our produce.

The US is currently involved in a consultation exercise over importing EU beef into the country, with a similar consultation exercise involving EU lamb due to take place.
