Welsh Lamb fuels cyclists as Olympic Flame arrives in Wales
Healthy eating and an active lifestyle go hand in hand.
That's why red meat promotion agency Hybu Cig Cymru will help spread the healthy living message to coincide with the Olympic torch arriving in Wales and the staging of a major national cycling event in Aberystwyth.
On Friday, the Olympic Torch enters Wales for a tour of the country. After stopping overnight in Cardiff it will make its way around Wales for the next five days, making further stops in Swansea, Aberystwyth, Bangor and Wrexham.
HCC will be manning the Wales the True Taste trailer on Aberystwyth Promenade as the flame arrives in Wales on Friday to show how red meat plays an important role in a healthy diet and to coincide with the arrival of the Halfords Tour Series in town.
The tour series forms part of the Aberystwyth Cycling Festival which will see professional riders and local children and cyclists racing around a road track through the town.
HCC will be giving out samples of healthy balanced recipes using Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef and booklets containing information about how what you eat directly impacts on sporting performance.
This message has been given the full backing of World Champion Cyclist Geraint Thomas, who will be competing at the Olympics in London this summer.
As a professional cyclist, my diet is very controlled to ensure that I can perform at my peak, but it's important for everyone to eat a healthy balanced diet.
Red meat provides essential nutrients such as protein, zinc and iron which are all important for fuelling the body during sport and helping the body to recover afterwards.
Elwen Roberts, HCC's Consumer Executive, said: We are proud to support the Aberystwyth Cycling Festival where we will be giving out information about why it's important to get the right nutrients to fuel you during exercise.
HCC is committed to tackle the growing problem of obesity through encouraging people to adopt a healthy, balanced diet that includes red meat. Latest figures published by the Welsh Government show that between 2003 and 2011, the number of obese adults in Wales has risen from 18 per cent to 22 per cent, with 57 per cent of the population now classified as overweight or obese.
The Halfords Tour Series will be held in Aberystwyth on Friday the 25th May 2012 as part of the Aberystwyth Cycling Festival and highlights of the event will be broadcast on ITV4.
Geraint Thomas will be representing Great Britain in the Team Pursuit event at the Olympic Games this summer.
