Teachers are being offered the chance to gain hands on and practical experience in using red meat in the classroom and understanding the role it has played in healthy diets in the past, present and future.
Secondary school food teachers from across Wales are being urged to make the most of the upcoming ‘Inspiring Food Teaching: now and in the future’ conference, designed to inspire and educate both teachers and their pupils.
Organised by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) in partnership with Meat and Education, the conference will be held on Saturday March 24 at the Radisson Blu hotel in Cardiff and is suitable for experienced teachers as well as trainees and non-subject specialists.
Free to attend, the conference is aimed to help teachers deliver new curriculum courses at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 levels by developing food science knowledge, broadening teachers’ understanding of red meat and health and provide an update on the latest product and food styling trends. There will also be a session which outlines the vast array of career choices within the food and drink industry which is akey industry for growth in Wales with the demand for skilled professionals in the future set to be high.
Speakers will include: Elwen Roberts, Consumer Executive at HCC; Alex White from the British Nutrition Foundation, Barbara Monks from thecookeryteacher.com, James Hicks, National Skills Academy for Food and Drink Wales and award-winning young butcher Peter Rushforth.
Event organiser Elwen Roberts said, “The Inspiring Food Teachers Conference will be a really great opportunity for teachers to gain a better understanding of food science relating to meat and suggestions how this can be embedded into their lessons, whilst gaining crucial professional development skills.”

The conference will last between 9:30am – 13:00pm on Saturday 24 March and will include a light lunch.
