Owners of a north Wales farm shop are celebrating winning the top butchery prize in awards dubbed the ‘Rural Oscars’.
At a ceremony at the National Assembly for Wales, the Countryside Alliance crowned the best rural businesses in the country. Winning the top prize in the meat industry section were Clive and Gail Swan, whose Swan’s Farm Shop business in Treuddyn near Mold has become famous for high quality traceable food.
The award is the latest in a run of success for members of the Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef Butchers Club, an alliance of over 200 high street businesses who are committed to sourcing the best local red meat.
The prize also comes at the start of National Butchers Week, which celebrates the skill, expertise and innovation of artisan butchers across the UK.
Presenting the award, Rachel Evans, Countryside Alliance Director for Wales, described Swan’s Farm Shop as “a family enterprise with an extensive range of meats from their own and neighbouring farms. Rearing their own cattle and pigs, purchasing lamb from the farm next door, poultry and game from within the county, this really is a perfect example of low food miles. A butcher’s block is in full view and the counter is fabulously presented with a variety of presentation techniques. I am delighted to award Clive and Gail Swan and family of Swans Farm shop with the best butcher award.”
Gail Swan said; “We are still in shock and absolutely delighted to have won the butchers’ prize at the Rural Oscars. Our farm shop is dedicated to supplying the best local produce, with home-produced beef and pork, local lamb, and over 20 varieties of burgers, sausages and kebabs made on the premises. We’re thrilled to have achieved this recognition.”
HCC Marketing Officer Kirstie Jones said, “We’re extremely proud of members of HCC’s Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef, whose work in sourcing quality local produce for their customers are often recognised in industry awards. Swan’s Farm Shop is an excellent example of a business which combines traditional values and innovative products for consumers – Clive and Gail thoroughly deserve their success.”
