The Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Education will help launch a new range of learning materials at the Royal Welsh Show, designed to help children understand how their food gets from farm to fork and how to prepare meat as part of a healthy balanced diet.
Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) has been working with Food and Nutrition teachers since September, providing training courses on using lamb, beef and pork in the classroom. Ready for the show, the red meat levy body has prepared a range of teaching packs, posters and recipe videos in both English and Welsh.
Research this year has given children a ‘could do better’ grade when it comes to knowledge about where their food comes from. According to a survey by the British Nutrition Foundation, 18 percent of 5-7 year olds said that fish fingers are made of chicken and one in ten 11-14 year olds do not know that carrots and potatoes grow underground.
“The launch of a new GCSE in Food and Nutrition has been the catalyst for a new range of professional development courses for teachers in this field, covering the whole of the secondary school curriculum, as well as the publication of new resources,” said HCC’s Consumer Executive Elwen Roberts.
“HCC is at the forefront of these developments, working with our colleagues across Britain in the ‘Meat and Education’ initiative, the WJEC and regional education consortia,” she added. “We’re proud to be launching our bilingual resources at the Royal Welsh Show with Kirsty Williams AM, and will make the pack available for teachers through the ‘Hwb’ site.”
