Local Welsh pig farm wins national award

Pwllheli-based pig farm and family business, Oinc Oink, has been awarded Pedigree Breeder of the Year at the National Pig Awards.

Huw and Ela Roberts of Oinc Oink have a herd of 30 Pedigree Welsh Pigs and are featured on the Porc.Wales website, dedicated to Wales' specialist farmers, artisan producers and master butchers of pork.

The category, open to all breeders of pedigree pigs, is judged by sector specific experts against a range of criteria. These including number of pigs sold to other breeders, performance at county shows, key breeders stats and processes to prevent inbreeding.

Huw and Ela have been farming since 2007 specialising in Welsh pedigree pigs. Both from farming backgrounds, they are the fifth generation of Huw’s family to farm this land.

Huw Roberts, Oinc Oink, said: “It’s a real honour to be awarded a national accolade for our pedigree breeding, and to fly the flag for pork from Wales. With pork from Wales, it’s all down to the quality of the meat. You have to taste it to believe it. It’s unique.”

Melanie Cargill, Market Development Officer, Porc.Wales, said: “The National Pig Awards are coveted awards in our industry, so we are immensely proud of Oinc Oink, a pork from Wales supplier who feature on our website (Porc.Wales), for winning this recognition. It’s great to get the message out there on a national scale that pork from Wales is of superb quality and taste, which is reflected in the produce that Oinc Oink and the many other suppliers featured on Porc.Wales have to offer.”
